Social media image sizes — a cheat sheet for Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and X
imagesocial mediasizes
Every platform crops images a little differently, and the “right” size depends on where the picture appears: a feed, a profile banner or a video thumbnail. These are the sizes most commonly recommended. Platforms change them now and then, so treat the table as a starting point and check the platform if exact placement matters.
The table
| Platform | Format | Size (px) | Aspect ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Post (square) | 1080 x 1080 | 1:1 | |
| Post (portrait) | 1080 x 1350 | 4:5 | |
| Story / Reel | 1080 x 1920 | 9:16 | |
| Post (landscape) | 1200 x 627 | 1.91:1 | |
| Post (square) | 1080 x 1080 | 1:1 | |
| Profile banner | 1584 x 396 | 4:1 | |
| YouTube | Thumbnail | 1280 x 720 | 16:9 |
| YouTube | Channel banner | 2560 x 1440 | 16:9 |
| X | Post image | 1600 x 900 | 16:9 |
| Shared image | 1200 x 630 | 1.91:1 |
How to choose
- Instagram feed: portrait (4:5) takes the most room on screen, so it tends to get more attention than a square.
- LinkedIn: a landscape 1.91:1 image suits link-style posts; square and portrait images work well for text-heavy graphics.
- YouTube thumbnails: 16:9 at 1280 x 720, kept readable when shrunk to a small card.
- Banners: keep important text in the middle. Banners are cropped differently on phones, tablets and desktops.
Make one in a minute
Open Markdown to image, pick the preset from the Size menu and the width and height are filled in for you. Choose “Fill width” if you want the image to span the whole canvas, or “Whole document” to keep every line visible.
